Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates technique (named after its founder Joseph Pilates) combines stretches and strengthening exercises in a way that makes it a safe and effective form of exercise. It is often recommended by medical practitioners to aid recovery and rehabilitation of an injury, especially back injuries. It is also seen as an excellent preventative technique that will strengthen your body against imbalances and potential injury.

The Benefits of Pilates

Postural muscles, such as our deep abdominal muscles or ‘core’ muscles, work to maintain stability. Core stability is necessary to support and protect the lower back from injury and to help general postural alignment. Core stability exercises are an important part of the Pilates method. Improving core stability can reduce the risk of injury and is often the way to get rid of niggling back problems that you may have suffered from for years.

By exercising all the muscle groups of the body it will create a strong, lean, balanced and highly toned body and it is in this way that it reduces the risk of injury and helps to eliminate nagging aches and pains. If you commit to a regular Pilates programme within weeks you will improve your posture, flexibility, as well as balance and co-ordination which becomes important as we get older.
