Neck Pain

Neck pain is very common with millions of people suffering with neck pain at some point in their lives. When you consider the work that the neck has to do, it is hardly surprising. It is a narrow structure that is capable of lots of movement and it also has to support the heavy weight of our heads.

Neck Pain The vast majority of nerves that connect your brain to your body pass through the neck and therefore it is important to make sure that our necks are healthy. Losing proper movement of the joints, which in turn causes joint dysfunction can cause pain. It may also interfere with the healthy working of the nerves in that area causing nerve irritation.

Nerve irritation can cause pain in places away from the neck. This is why we may treat your neck even though your symptoms occur elsewhere such as in your arm, for example. Our chiropractors are specially trained to detect spinal joint dysfunction using precise palpation of the individual movements. Standard orthopaedic and neurological tests may also be used to arrive at the correct diagnosis.

Treatment offered by your chiropractor will be specifically tailored to you and your neck problem with the predominant aim of normalising your joint function. This can be achieved using a variety of treatment methods including chiropractic manipulation, medical acupuncture, soft tissue therapies (stretching, massage) and home exercises.

This effective treatment is generally painless although you may feel some short-term discomfort if your neck is already sore. Although everybody responds differently, in most cases patients notice some significant improvement within 2-3 weeks.

If improvements are not seen then further investigation (for example X-rays) or onward referral may be necessary. Periodic check-ups to maintain improvements may be of benefit in some cases.
