What is Pilates?
The Pilates technique is an exercise system developed in the early 20th Century by Joseph Pilates which systematically exercises all the muscle groups in your body, both weak and strong. Pilates has a focus on the core which is the area between your shoulders and pelvis. It combines focus on the flexibility of yoga with emphasis on proper postural alignment, core strength, muscle balance and strength building through a series of low-impact movements.
Pilates is popular in the field of fitness to improve performance, improve movement control, prevent injuries and the rehabilitation of injuries. As well as high performing athletes, Pilates is also useful to those who struggle with back, neck and joint pain from everyday work and tasks. Strengthening the core and improving postural awareness will improve body function and thereby alleviate pain and prevent injury. Pilates has been used and recommended for many years to those who suffer back, neck and joint pain, osteoarthritis and posture related pain. It is useful to progress individuals through movements that represent their day to day activities. Exercises can be adapted to the needs of the individual to provide either a gentle strength training programme or a challenging workout. It has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness.
